Parks Update

Parks staff continue to roll out and complete maintenance projects during the summer season. A major project completed this week involved replacing a damaged playground slide at Furber Park on the play structure intended for children ages 2-5.The plastic slide had a small lateral crack along the center, likely incurred through regular daily use of the slide. Parks staff quickly allocated funds toward replacing the slide to limit interruption in use of the damaged slide and maintain safety standards. The replacement of the slide was completed in accordance with the CPSI, International Playground Safety Institute. Fall protection standards were also addressed by adding a fresh layer of certified woodchips at the base of the slide.

In addition to the playground slide project, Park staff responded to a fallen tree at the Porterfield Creek Open Space.
A regular volunteer with the  City Of Cloverdale Parks Department reported a fallen tree across the top of the Hidden Loop Trail within the Open Space. The multi-trunked Oak tree failed and landed across the trail creating a safety hazard. Parks staff Miguel Sanchez and Mario Andrade quickly gathered all the necessary protective gear including chaps, hard hat, gloves, ear protection, and safety glasses before hiking up the trail and removing the tree. Several tree rounds were utilized to mark some of the steeper trail edges. Lastly, several hours were allocated to perform a general clean-up at the Cloverdale Library as well as several reported irrigation leaks repaired throughout City Parks.

Hazardous Tree Removed at Cloverdale Cemetery

Following an assessment by City Arborist Héctor Galván, a hazardous tree was removed from the Cloverdale Cemetery. The mature Oak tree has endured 3 years of severe drought and has been in consistent decline.

The Cloverdale Fire Department volunteered to help parks staff remove the dangerous tree that was leaning toward several graves belonging to local Cloverdale families. The tree expertise of Justin McNulty with Cloverdale Fire District played a huge role in the removal process. It was a delicate and precise task due to the several potential targets nearby such as traffic, utility lines, pedestrians and concrete monuments of our local heroes.

Special Thanks to Justin McNulty for all of his help as well as Fire Chief Jason Jenkins for always being willing to assist with these type of projects at the cemetery.

Resilient Cloverdale - Social Cohesion Follow Up Survey

Resilient Cloverdale, a cross-sector initiative committed to advancing the resilience of Cloverdale and the surrounding community, is working with a research team from San Francisco State University to assess the role that social cohesion has played in the Cloverdale community’s responses to recent crises. Social cohesion refers to the strengths of relationships, including feelings of connectedness, reliability, and trust, among community members.

This project includes a confidential survey designed to help us to learn more about how social ties, community, and neighbors can assist during future crises that affect Cloverdale. As a follow-up to the Social Cohesion Survey conducted in spring 2021, information from this survey will help us assess whether gaps in social cohesion identified from the first survey have persisted, improved, or gotten worse. The findings will be used to help identify community-led strategies to improve resilience for all members of the Cloverdale community.  Make sure your input is part of this process. La Familia Sana Presents Fruits of Labor

Familia Sana is honored to present a community showing and Directors Q & A of FRUITS OF LABOR. This SXSW 2021 film selection documents a Mexican-American teenager's dreams of graduating high school when increased ICE raids in her community threaten to separate her family and force her to become the breadwinner for her family. She works long days in the strawberry fields and the night shift at a food processing factory. Set in an agricultural town on the central coast of California, FRUITS OF LABOR is a coming-of-age story about an American teenager traversing the seen and unseen forces that keep her family trapped in poverty. A lyrical meditation on adolescence, nature, and ancestral forces, the film asks, what does it mean to come into one's power as a working young woman of color in the wealthiest nation in the world?
