Parks Update

Parks staff began the first phase of the Pickleball construction project at Furber Park. It began with redesigning the existing irrigation system located inside the perimeter of proposed courts. A main 4’’ water line that feeds the entire park was relocated away from the court area.  Several other 2” water lines were rerouted as well. A total of 30 sprinklers heads were removed, ultimately providing significant water savings. The next phase of the project is to grade the site and address the drainage system to ensure proper drainage. This will we followed by the construction of the courts, expected in the next few weeks.

New BBQ grills were installed at the Second Street City Park this week. This in response to an increased interest in grilling expressed by residents. Two existing damaged grills were removed and replaced with more convenient grills that turn 360 degrees to accommodate grilling/cooking from all directions. Plans to replace the remaining grills at the park are underway.

The Northern Sonoma County Fire protection District (Fire fuels Crew) began the second phase of the Russian River Corridor and River Park Vegetation Management project. The Northern Sonoma County Fire Fuels Crew begin the project on the North side of the River Park trail approximately 200 yards past the water plant, continuing up into Sonoma County Regional Parks property. Once this phase is complete, crews will begin work on the south of the First Street bridge. The main priority this week was to perform a fire fuels reduction strategy to protect the City’s water treatment facility. Mayor Lands, Senior Water Operator Darren Hernandez, Carla Delgadillo with the fire fuels crew, Parks Superintendent Hector Galvan and Birkin Newell with the Russian River Keeper performed a bird survey before the work began. All vegetation accumulated from this project was grind-chipped and broadcast onsite assisting in the suppression of invasive vegetation.

Special Thanks to Mayor Lands who led this effort to protect our infrastructure and our City against fire threats.

The Sonoma County Library believes that kids shouldn’t have all the fun during the summer months, which is why the library’s Summer Reading Challenge offers events and activities for all ages, including adults. The library is hosting free programs for adults at library branches across Sonoma County this summer. The Summer Reading Challenge runs through August 13 and is open to all, and those who participate can earn free books and win prizes.

“We are excited to offer a variety of educational and entertaining events this summer, including jazz concerts, gardening workshops and emergency preparedness seminars. The library is open for you to learn and explore,” said Aleta Dimas, Adult Services Administrator at the Sonoma County Library.

Patrons can enjoy live music at their local branch, such as jazz and pop tunes with the Dave Rocha Jazz trio, traditional Cuban and current Latin songs with Afro-Cuban trio Sabor De Mi Cuba, and Portuguese fado music with singer Ramana Vieria—or all of the above. Adults can also learn about composting with the UC Master Gardeners and how to prepare a go-bag with the library’s Sonoma Ready Series, brought to you in partnership with the Sonoma County Department of Emergency Management.

As a part of the Summer Reading Challenge, the library is also offering various events and activities for children, tweens and teens. View the full Summer Reading Challenge schedule at sonomalibrary.org/events.
