Parks & Recreation Department Weekly Update

Parks staff continued work on critical maintenance projects this week.

Overview of maintenance activities performed this week:

  • Warmer weather has caused the need for weed abatement throughout parks and open spaces. String weed eating was performed at the Second Street City Park, River Park and L&L District Sunrise Hills.  Parks staff plan to continue vegetation maintenance efforts for several weeks within city maintained parks and landscape areas.
  • Although Baseball and Little League are planned later in Spring, Parks staff began implementing field preparation maintenance at Second Street City Park and Furber Park. Several yards of leaves were raked at both parks as well as field grading and leveling.

Parks Provide Volunteer Opportunities for High School Students

The Community Development and Parks Department provides opportunities to high school students to earn volunteer hours required to graduate from Cloverdale High School. This week, eager students worked on beautifying the Cloverdale Regional Library.

Tasks performed by students included weed pulling, raking leaves and sweeping. See images below.

The second group of volunteers tackled the chore of spreading woodchips near the playground and parking lot at Furber Park. The intent of this project was to create a weed barrier to minimalize vegetation growth as well as keeping the soil consistently moist for the upcoming Summer. A total of 18 yards were distributed within the Park.

City Completes Pepperwood Sewer Main Line Repair

The City completed repair and replacement of approximately 30' of 8'' sewer main line on Pepperwood Drive this week.  Replacement of the sewer main line is part of a proactive maintenance program to ensure that the main line continues to function properly as part of the City Sanitary sewer collection system that returns wastewater to the City's Wastewater Treatment Plan for final processing.

Replacement of the sewer line was needed due to a concrete plug in the line.
The concrete plug was identified when the City performed smoke testing of the line to locate and identify leaks in the wastewater collection system.  The work was performed by Andersen Excavating and overseen by Senior Wastewater Plant Operator Jay Robinson.
