Drought Alert

Much needed Rainfall Not an End to the Drought – Water Conservation Continues.

Last week’s Atmospheric River:

Lake Mendocino storage level was 17,617 acre- feet as of Thursday, October 28, 2021 and continues to gain. This increase followed the Category 5 atmospheric river event on October 23rd and 24th . The gain in Lake Mendocino's storage level is expected to continue to increase for up to two weeks after the storm, due to runoff. Additional precipitation is forecasted in the first week of November.

Atmospheric River NOT a Drought Buster:

  • This initial storm event of the season dropped a lot of rainfall but it was not a drought buster. Conservation from our community is still needed!
  • Lake Mendocino is still only 31% of target levels (58,894 acre-feet) for October.
  • Ongoing conservation is still needed in order to save the water we did receive and prepare for future possible dry months ahead.
  • The City of Cloverdale continues to implement its water shortage emergency.

Over 9 Inches of Rain Measured at City Corporation Yard!

City staff maintain a  rain gauge at the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant. The gauge is monitored daily.  During the preceding week, City staff measured over 9 inches of rain fall at the City's Corporation Yard. The bulk of the rain fall on Sunday the 24th.

City crews responded to the atmospheric river event with a "all hands on deck" approach responding to localized flooding, downed trees, and service calls. Preparation for the storm started days in advance, when crews cleared storm drains, trimmed trees and provided a sandbag station at City Park. Big shout out to the Public Works Crews for doing an amazing job keeping our community spaces safe during the historic storm event!

Updated Striping Added at 4Cs Preschool

City staff completed curb painting along the east side of North Washington Street adjacent to the Cloverdale 4C's Pre-school.
City staff painted red curb at the crosswalk and white curb has been painted for the entire 74 feet available along the frontage.  The existing red curb at the fire hydrant was also refreshed. The white curb denotes a passenger loading zone which allows for 3-minute parking to load/unload passengers. The curb painting is intended to support pedestrian safety at the crosswalk and enable families to park and walk their children into preschool.

Sonoma 4Cs is a local 501c3 nonprofit that is a resource for families, care providers and the community at large. The Community Child Care Council (4Cs) has been working since 1972 to ensure every child in Sonoma County has the care and early education they need.

Traffic Signal Repaired at Brookside Drive

The City of Cloverdale received reports on Monday that the traffic signal on S. Cloverdale Boulevard and Brookside Drive was operating in flashing mode. On Tuesday, The City's electrical contractor responded promptly to the flashing traffic signal lights and made an emergency replacement of the existing traffic signal controller that was no longer operational.

The signals are equipped with Interfacing Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS). All of the pedestrian push buttons have custom voice audio files that provide information about the status of signal phases available to visually impaired pedestrians.  The signal is now working properly.

Parks and Recreation Crew Hard at Work

This storm delivered much needed rain but inevitably created extra maintenance and cleanup across the City and in our local parks. Paks staff completed several post storm maintenance project during this work week.

  • Parks staffed collaborated with all City departments including Cloverdale Police Department and the Fire Department to address some of the flooding issues throughout town during the recent storm event.
  •  A significant incident took place at the Second Street City Park where  a mature Valley Oak faied during the storm. The accumulated moisture at the base of the tree, along with the high winds, caused the entire tree to collapse. The saturated ground being unable to support the anchor roots and flares. Approximate age of the tree was 150-185 years in age, 5’ DBH, and about 80’ tall. The tree has been pruned annually, for the last five years by a contracted tree company. We maintained the health of the tree to ISA standards, it was a combination of age and extreme conditions which caused the tree to fail, despite our efforts.

Parks staff also began preparing for our annual Christmas Lights installation along the downtown corridor and plaza. This entails pruning back and limbing up trees from around the light poles and business signs in downtown Cloverdale.
